WH Smith Slashes Lead Times with Sodick AG100L

A Sodick AG100L CNC die sink machine, installed by WHSmith and Sons (Tools) Ltd, means the company can spark large tools, such as automotive radiator grille cavities, in about a week (100-150 hours) whereas before it could take four weeks using machines of smaller capacity.

Toolroom Manager, Stephen Hunt, comments; “The AG100L is not limited to large parts and electrodes. It is also excellent for features such as thin ribs, and the greater capability of the machine gives us new freedom from a design perspective.”

WHS offers a complete injection moulding service, including product and tool design, toolmaking, injection moulding, painting and assembly. In recent years the 300-employee, £15 million turnover company, has expanded its toolmaking operations, and today this business function has an annual turnover in the region of £3 million. The toolroom, which employs 20 staff, is one of the largest and most advanced in the UK plastics industry.
